Artist's Comments

A few more examples of fractals created using the (experimental) plugin-directed colorization support in the Apophysis JK 2.08 mod. The examples were created using the mandel2 plugin, a preliminary version of which I should be releasing soon. All images were created using the Apophysis 2.08 JK mod.

The top two images demonstrate a "smoky" effect resulting from the use of a "scatter" parameter, whereas the bottom row uses a different colorization mode and gradient. The bottom right image shows a zoomed-in version of the image to its left.

You can find the Apophysis 2.08 JK mod (both executable and source code) at my project Sourceforge page. The Apophysis JK mod has a number of experimental features briefly described in this journal article.

As soon as I learn how to use plugins I'm going to try this, I love these. :D

Can't wait for the plugin.

I compiled the mandel2 source in your SVN Repo, but I cannot really get this effect. Can I maybe have some sample params? :eyes:

FAQ #39: How to get more pageviews?

Sorry about the confusion. The first thing to do is to go to the Color tab in the Editor and change Symmetry from 0 (the default) to 1 (or -1).

(I take that back. The first thing you should do is to make sure you're using the plugin with the Apophysis JK mod, which contains the experimental support for plugin-directed colorization.)

In the early mandel2 code that I had committed to the SVN repository -- committed in preliminary form mainly to serve as one example of how a plugin could influence the algorithm -- I had temporarily hijacked the symmetry parameter to act as sort of a color "scale factor". (That was a bad idea for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the color scale really had nothing to do with the purpose of the "symmetry" parameter.)

More recent versions of my plugin code (though unfortunately not yet committed to the repository) now define explicit variation-specific parameters for the color scale factor instead of (mis)using the symmetry parameter.

Please treat the mandel2 plugin as in a state of flux at the moment (there's some fun new functionality and an expanded set of parameters, etc. in the official" mandel2 plugin code -- which I hope to commit/release very soon, or at least as soon as I can get some time to look at it again). If you've created something nice using the code in the SVN repository, getting the same results using the official version may need some minor tweaking/renaming of parameters (that's one case where the import alias features of the Apo mod might come in handy). There are a number of other issues with the SVN version which are fixed in the updated code as well, so I'll try to get that committed and make a pre-built release version as soon as possible.

Notwithstanding the above, the example code is there for anyone to play around with, manipulate, and/or otherwise modify the code (including trying out some of the colorization aspects in other plugins you might build). Please feel free to do so. Questions and constructive suggestions are always welcome.

If you still have questions, I can try to provide some example parameters consistent with the version in SVN when I get back to my development box (actually `DragonWinter's computer) in the next few days.
